As Gideon Haigh puts it, offspin is cricket’s rubbish skill. Legspin, when administered correctly, is a delightful combination of drift, flight, spin and variations that conspires to bewilder and confound the batsman. Finger spin, on the other hand, has the main purpose of tieing down one end to stem the run flow. When Mitchell Johnson’s opening spell on Day 1 was flat and insipid, Ricky Ponting responded by spelling him after only 3 overs. I was surprised and impressed. Ponting as a captain tends to let things drift. This on the other hand smacked of nimble and decesive captaincy, positively Vaughanesque, a trait I’d not associated with Ponting before. Could this be a new phase in his captaincy...

Phillip Hughes
Simon Katich
Ricky Ponting
Michael Clarke
Michael Hussey (demoted one spot due to lack of form)
Marcus North
Brad Haddin
Mitchell Johnson
Brett Lee
Peter Siddle
Stuart Clark
And the other guys left to carry the kit bag...

Australia is in the crapper. The natural instinct is to blame Ricky Ponting’s meandering captaincy that allowed England to take a dominant position on Day 4. When England were teetering, Punter brought on Shane Watson. Usually, a bowler has a point of focus as he comes in to bowl. Some quicks target the top of off stump. I laser focus on the spot on the pitch where I hope to land the ball. W...
